JEANS, THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE FUTURE
The aprroximate fashion jeans world production is of 4 billion pieces a year.
Jeans will keep selling as there is not yet a substitute product that can offer better features than denim at affordable prices. In terms of finishing, same trends and finishes come and go.For the last decade, trends have been related to more complex washing process techniques compared to simple washing techniques of the 1990´s. Now the market is more specialized and diverse but future is still bright for this product.
However, recently the market has become more aware of what is called "eco-friendly jeans". Those are fashion jeans that are produced under conditions that do not harm the environment. Not all the companies have implemented these techniques on all the garments but slowly the markert is picking up as consumers are more aware of environmental concerns.
Chemicals that polute the environment such as avoid using process chemicals such as sand blasting silicates, peroxides, acids for bleaching, permanganates, etc. In spite of the fact that many processing plants do use water treatment biological and chemical recycling plants, in many instances such facilities are not available or even not running properly. Fabric control on chemicals used are tested these days to avoid the use of toxix chemicals on the manufacturing process of organic cotton.
Implementation and verification of ecofriendly processing techniques must be done through independent specialized companies such as Bureau Veritas, GSG, government environmental agencies, etc. Today still there is not enough implementation requirements worldwide. Governments do not offer still enough incentives for brands and manufacturers to produce the garments through eco friendly techniques, not to mention that implementation or verification is not intensive enough.
One possible scenario for developing eco friendly product environment products could be done through a duty free benefit or larger quota system. This way, the brand could benefit and also the manufacturer could be more competitive. Ecofriendly fashion garments are marked with special tags as this one below:
"Water less" fashion jeans are garments that are produced by using much less water than regularly produced jeans. Levi´s has been a pioneer brand for this and implemented a water less process requirement in its manufacturing facilities. Garments produced with such a requirement are properly marked with their tags so consumer can be properly informed. Pleasee the below link for water less

Recycling fabric waste is also a practice that can help the environment and efficient use of resources. Swedish company Nudie Jeans is doing so through a recycling program from fabric waste, spinning, weaving and garment manufacturing. See the link

Vendor compliance and factory safety. In the aftermath of the tragic Tazreen factory fire in Bangladesh, worker safety has emerged as a top supply chain issue, so companies must also consider factory safety as they evaluate their sourcing mix. Supply chain systems are invaluable here as well, by providing instant access to vendor profiles, with critical information such as vendor profiles that include each supplier's current compliance audits, quality and performance history, and factory safety records. Systems can even proactively notify retailers, brands and factories of upcoming audit and re-certification dates and assign a corrective action plan if factories don't pass the audit.
The Future of fashion jeans production seems to be assured. This business has been already shipped to lower wages countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Cotton availability and labor availability are definitely an important issue for countries involved in this niche. What else can be done in the process of designing, manufacturing and selling jeans is still a question mark. However, we can see in the last decade that faster and more diverse manufacturing is required.
Perhaps we will see some big fully vertical manufacturing units more involved in the selling process in order to maximize their profits. Some big brands may take over vertical manufacturing units in order to control the whole manufacturing and distribution process. No company has done yet such a move in a big scale but competition can push corporations for this scenario. This flow can generally be optimized by streaming up the ownership or partnership for the whole manufacturing and distribution process.

Another possibility for the future of jeans is what I call "customized just on time", CJIT. A consumer will be able to order on store or online a customized garment of his own choice and this garment will be delivered in very short time to his household. An friendly software program will be developed in order for rookies to assemble tha garment online or in the shop. For the fitting, and pattern, a store database or a store show room can be used for such a purpose before taking this decission. This possibility can be a choice for value added fashion jeans in the shops. Jeans could have all sort of embroideries, accesories, patches, prints, cuts, washing effects, etc. Of course price would be much higher than regular jeans. Similar concept is done with shirt printings. There are some shops that keep of stock of shirts and they print inhouse a specific design chosen by customer.
The advantages of CJIT offers a unique fashion for specific consumers,
"Make your own jeans" is definetely a trend that will increase over time as consumers do desire exclusivity in their shopping choices. The key to develop an "immediate" delivery of a customized unique jean will be how to deal with the logistics of making one pair of jeans with very little time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this company side named http://www.makeyourownjeans.com/ you can get your clothing fully customized. online. They can make the garment in 2-3 weeks. I think the timing needs to be improved drastically and I think is possible. It is possible because garment makers can develop samples for well known brands with a time frame of 2-3 days (cutting, stiching and washing) plus 2-3 days of courier shipping. This means that in just 2 to 6 days a customized fashion jean should be delivered to customer. If we push it more and the stiching facilities are in same country, we could reduce still the transist time to one day or two. Prices does not seem excessive for such a customized service but timing definetely needs to be improved. Consumer in many instances is not willing to wait 2-3 weeks to have a pair of jeans.

ECO-DECLARATION OF JEANS
Slowly the people of the world is becoming more environmental aware that we must take care of the planet and resources. In France, there are companies that are presenting Environmental Products declarations. These declaration focus on all the aspects of the production of jeans, from cotton to final product in order to ensure to consumers that a jean has been manufactured under certain rules to protect the environment. This is what they also call LCA (Lyfe Cycle Assessment).
The come up with a number of parameters or indicators that determine the lyfe cicle of a pair of jeans. Some of the parameters are as follows:
This indicator expresses the consumption of natural energy resources.
Climate Change
This indicator reflects the emissions of greenhouse gases which are responsible for climate change.
Ozone Layer Depletion
Indicator that reflects the damage done to the ozone layer.
Human Toxicity
Indicator that reflects the emissions in the air, water and soils of toxic substances which present a
potential risk for human beings.
Aquatic Eco-Toxicity
Indicator that reflects the emissions in the air, water and soils of toxic substances which present a
potential risk for aquatic fauna and flora.
Water Eutrophication
Indicator that reflects the decrease in aquatic fauna and flora due to the excessive development of algae
which consume oxygen, development which is facilitated by an excessive concentration of nutriments
in water (especially nitrates and phosphates).
Water Consumption
Indicator that reflects the water consumption that is directly linked to the trousers life cycle (irrigation
of cotton fields, water consumption during the manufacturing and utilization of trousers).
Production of Household Waste
Indicator that reflects the quantity of waste that is produced as a direct result of the trousers life cycle
(loss of cotton, washing powder’s packaging, waste trousers).
Distribution of environmental impacts during the trousers life cycle
Key outcomes::
Contributes between 5 and 9% to the total life cycle
Contributes between 10 and 34%to the total life cycle
Contributes between 35 and 59% to the total life cycle
Contributes for more than 60% to the total life cycle

C&A brand is also focusing in the usage of organic cotton for their garments. C&A is committed to the cultivation of organic cotton, not least in order to meet our loyal customers’ increasing desire for ecological products. Organic cotton has many advantages. For one thing, garments made from this sustainable raw material are especially kind to skin, which is why it is used for babies’ and children’s clothing in particular. However, organic farming methods also allow the soil, water, air and ecosystems in the manufacturing countries to recover, which has a positive effect on the health and living conditions of the people working there and their families. All these factors put together give you a great feeling when you wear our organic cotton collection.
