GARMENT FACTORY COLLAPSES IN BANGLADESH (610 CASUALTIES)

We (consumers, brands, governments and manufacturers) need to make an effort to protect workers in garment factories in the developing world. This accident  is not the only case as it has happened before in several countries. We all need to do something to avoid from happening again.

My suggestion is that every brand, when importing garments should pay a small tax to its local government. Government should develop new legislation for safety in the work place abroad and should appoint internationally recognized agencies (auditors) to inspect and implement safety measures for the workers in the country.

A manufacturer should take all necessary steps to protect the lyfe of its workers according to the standard required in the normative. If not properly fullfilled then the manufacturer should be banned from making garments for the company. We consumers should  request, to be displayed on  jeans labels, proper autiditing and implementation. It is certain that there are companies that do have a code of conduct and a normative to follow but certainly is not enough and not implemented properly.

This year also, in Karachi, Pakistan, a garment factory was burned completely and many workers were trapped and died inside the factory. We all do have some responsibility to protext those workers in developed countries that their working conditions are hard enough. The minimum we should be doing is to protext their lifes in the workplace.

Please listen to the following radio message on the accident in Bangladesh

There is an instituion named MSN that since 1994 is following these issues globally.

The Maquila Solidarity Network (MSN) is a labour and women's rights organization that supports the efforts of workers in global supply chains to win improved wages and working conditions and a better quality of life. Please see the web page
see MSN > Please watch also the following video to implement a proper system to protect workers in developing countries We consumers MUST value of the lyfe of workers in the developing world. They work for us by making cheap garments and under many conditions that we mostly are not aware of it. This forum pretends to raise more awareness by people, brands, governments and manufacturers that we cannot keep doing business as usual but we must protect worker´s lyfe and dignity. If an accident like that would occur in a factory in the western world, the reactions would definetely be strict and severe. We should make foreign workers one of our own the same way we make of our own the garments they stich for us.
